While it is not required to visit for any quest, this graveyard features tons of secrets, including valuable items and unique interactions with some of Baldur's Gate 3's companions.

Some of the interactions present in the graveyard are more obvious, such as meeting a young child trying out necromancy or visiting Astarion's gravestone should he be romanced. However, others are much more hidden and can only be discovered if the entire graveyard is thoroughly explored.

Baldur's Gate 3: Most Important Events In Act 2, Ranked

There are a lot of great events to check out in Act 2 of Baldur's Gate 3. Here are some of the most important.

The Four Mausoleums

Baldur's Gate 3: All Hidden Secrets In The Graveyard (2)

There are four mausoleums that players can enter in the Lower City Graveyard. Each is locked, but can be unlocked with a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check. The Hhune, Durinbold, and Gorion Mausoleums are connected by holes in the wall.

Durinbold Mausoleum

Opening any of the coffins in the Durinbold Mausoleum will trigger a battle against the ghosts of Houndmaster Pol and the family's hounds. Inside the coffins are several helpful potions and arrows, most notably an Elixir of Cloud Giant Strength.

Gorion Mausoleum

The Gorion Mausoleum does not have much exciting loot, but it is a nice reference to Gorion, the foster father of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2's protagonist. A single Elixir of Heroism can be picked up from Gorion's sarcophagus.

Grand Mausoleum

The Grand Mausoleum, also known as the Ancient Mausoleum, is filled with traps that cast Hunger of Hadar on the party if triggered. Behind these traps are locked chests filled with gold. Books scattered around this mausoleum contain some surprising information about the mysterious Withers.

Hhune Mausoleum

The Hhune Mausoleum is filled with tripwire traps, so bringing along a Rogue to disarm them is recommended. At the base of the sarcophagus inside the mausoleum is a highlighted tile. If 400lbs / 180kg of weight is placed on the tile, it will unlock a secret room. Inside the room are two chests containing alchemy ingredients, potions, and gold.

Baldur's Gate 3: All Hidden Secrets In The Graveyard (3)

Astarion isn't the only Baldur's Gate 3 party member with a connection to the Lower City Graveyard. If both Shadowheart and Karlach are brought into the graveyard, they can find the graves of people they know.

Karlach's Parents

In the center row of the graveyard are two side-by-side graves belonging to Karlach's parents, Pluck and Caerlack Cliffgate. If Karlach is in the party, she will stop and talk to the graves in a unique cut scene. She tells them "Taters," a special phrase meaning "I love you" in the Cliffgate family.

Shadowheart's Mentor

Shadowheart will feel a surprising sense of sadness near the grave of Allister Marnley. Due to Shar's meddling with her memories, she can't remember Marnley clearly, but believes that he was a mentor to her. If the player puts a Night Orchid, Shadowheart's favorite flower, on the grave, the cleric will thank them.

The Graves Of Branwen And Eldoth

Baldur's Gate 3: All Hidden Secrets In The Graveyard (4)

One tombstone near the Durinbold Mausoleum marks the resting place of "Mighty Branwen" protected by "The Foehammer." This easy-to-miss grave belongs to a companion from the original Baldur's Gate game. Branwen, a cleric of Tempus the Foehammer, was turned into stone by an evil mage and displayed as a carnival attraction. Should players free her, she would join the party as a companion.

Another grave, this one near the Grand Mausoleum, belongs to Eldoth, a bard who could also join the party in Baldur's Gate. Eldoth was a sleazy fellow with few morals. Another companion, duke's daughter Skie Silvershield, was in love with him, but he used her for her money and did not have genuine feelings.

It's great that Baldur's Gate 3 gives fans the option of playing through the game in split-screen, but it still needs some big improvements.

Digging Up Graves For Treasure

Baldur's Gate 3: All Hidden Secrets In The Graveyard (6)

Some graves can be dug up and contain treasure or unique interactions. These graves are marked by a pile of dirt that can be interacted with if the player has a Shovel in their inventory. However, Mortarch Gracie Scyre, who protects the graveyard, may prevent the player from digging them up if she is not killed or knocked out. The following can be found in dug-up graves:

  • A man, Gothric Rillyn, who was buried alive by Minsc the Stone Lord as a punishment. He will give the player a Rapier+1 if rescued.
  • A kobold, Bugthimble, who is robbing the grave of a man named Kurwin. If killed, he drops the unique Scimitar Kurwin's Cauteriser, which deals bonus Fire damage and causes the target to burn.
  • The corpse of a woman, Janina, with a letter indicating that she was going to run away from her family with a handsome man she met in a tavern. The man she met was likely Astarion or one of his vampire spawn siblings.
  • The corpse of Ellswort, a gnome who explodes if touched. Notes found in Araj Oblodra's home indicate that Ellswort was one of the blood-obsessed drow's experiments.
  • A man, Felix, buried with his five cats.

Finally, players can enter the Mortuary and interact with its keeper, Valmorba. Players who want to do a good deed can convince Valmorba to make a coffin for the child of two grieving parents outside the mortuary. Those who just want loot can also break into the Mortuary Cellar to discover alchemy ingredients, clothing dyes, and the preserved lungs of necromancer Mystic Carrion. Several NPCs in the graveyard can also be interacted with, including Strange Beggar Morbus, one of Carrion's experiments, and the flower vendor Maude, who sells flowers that can be placed on graves.

This fairly small, out of the way location is absolutely filled with things to explore and discover. Every tomb has a name on it, and so many graves have a story. Baldur's Gate 3 players should definitely take a little bit of extra time to check out the Lower City Graveyard while in Baldur's Gate - particularly with Karlach and Shadowheart in tow for their unique dialogue. Perhaps Larian Studios hid even more secrets in the graveyard that players have yet to find and may be discovered in the future.
