The Danish royal palace has confirmed that Prince Joachim and Princess Marie, along with their children, will remain in Washington D.C. for the foreseeable future. This news comes as a surprise, considering the couple's previous statements about their desire to return to Denmark.
In a statement released by the palace, it was announced that Prince Joachim's position as Defense Industry Attaché and Deputy Defense Attaché in Washington D.C. has been extended until August 2027. This means the family will continue their life in the US, with their children, Count Henrik and Countess Athena, attending school there.
"As defense industry attaché, Prince Joachim plays a crucial role, reporting to the Ministry of Defense and collaborating closely with the ambassador in Washington," the statement explained.
The decision to extend their stay is particularly interesting given Prince Joachim's recent comments. In an interview with TV2, he expressed his family's longing to return home, stating, "We have a desire to come home. But we also do not rule out the possibility of staying abroad. It's a delicate balance."
The royal couple, along with their teenage children, had previously moved to the US in 2023, following a stint in Paris from 2019. Prince Joachim, the younger brother of King Frederik, has openly admitted to feeling homesick, acknowledging the challenges of being away from their social support network in Denmark.
However, Princess Marie did return to Denmark in August to fulfill her royal engagements, including the Copenhagen Cooking Festival. It seems the family is trying to strike a balance between their duties and their personal lives.
But here's where it gets controversial: Prince Joachim's two older sons from his previous marriage, Count Nikolai and Count Felix, were stripped of their royal titles by their grandmother, Queen Margrethe, in 2022. This decision caused quite a stir, with the former monarch stating that she wanted her grandchildren to have the freedom to shape their own paths. As a result, Nikolai, Felix, Henrik, and Athena are not expected to carry out royal duties.
