Bag It For this project, the 1st year BA Industrial Design students had to design a bag, or a collection of bags. Whether for hiking in the mountains, trout fishing, camera protection, carrying tools or everyday shopping.The type of bag, its use and the materials used were free, but mainly soft materials and textiles in all their forms, preferably sustainable: traditional, natural, technical, active, woven, non-woven, knitted, were favored. The following aspects should be at the heart of their thinking, and should be carefully researched: Target context of use, function, ergonomics, construction, production and materials.

Soft Power Under the direction of Christophe Guberan, the students used their design talents to rethink an everyday object that consumes more energy than it should, using their powers of observation to choose a type of contemporary object that consumes energy and reduce its dependence on energy during use. Design as a discipline of innovation, can play a key role in improving the energy impact of a product. The intensive use of energy resources that were thought to be unlimited, such as electricity, is now being called into question. The current situation is all the more alarming: governments are preparing for possible energy shortages (fossil fuels, electricity, etc.). It is in this worrying context that design has a duty to provide a concrete response to future needs while respecting the use of our resources.

Inclusive Soft Goods Hardware In collaboration with ASA-Handicap mental and the Senior-lab, the Bachelor students, led by designer Friederike Daumiller, present a collection of closing and fastening systems for clothing, bags and wearable accessories that make them easier to use, helping to make them more universal and inclusive. The fittings on soft goods go barely noticed most of the time, yet form a crucial part of the products overall appearance and user experience. As soon as we become restricted in our mobility, some of the mechanisms of these fittings can quickly become a major challenge in everyday life.

Much Faster, Much Slower Second year Interaction Design students developped a messaging app centered around the theme of “Much Faster / Much Slower”. The goal is to create a unique mobile messaging app that offers a distinctive experience compared to existing instant messaging apps. The project explores the impact of technology on our relationship with speed and communication. It focuses on how advancements in technologies have shaped our experiences and preferences for speed. The project also looks at the role of instant messaging apps in changing the way we communicate and interact, taking up a significant amount of our daily engagement time. The goal is to translate this fascination with speed and slowness into innovative interaction design concepts related to communication. NOMAD NOMAD aims to elevate conversations with loved ones, creating a sense of special and unique moments where both parties feel truly connected. This is achieved through key features such as appointment management, live streaming during chats, and a typewriter tool that adds a natural flow to the conversation. By combining space and time into one platform, NOMAD elevates the essence of meaningful conversations. ByViktor GagnéBOUNCY BOUNCYis a messaging app that uses simple shapes to chat with your friends. The use of these shapes quickly gives the appearance of an abstract and funny conversation. The messages in the system come to life through interaction, allowing the user to personalize their messages with shape, color, and emotion. The elasticity and physical properties of the messages add a dynamic quality as they bounce off one another. As a result, the conversation becomes an abstract representation of shape and color, showcasing the messages history. The app assigns a color-coded genre to each user and offers a built-in radio and database to personalize the listening experience. To start a conversation, users answer 10 questions based on their musical data, unlocking the ability to chat freely with others. ByJérémie KursnerSCRABBLES SCRABBLESis a messaging app that adds a fun twist to communication. Users send messages by playing games like Pictionary, Tic Tac Toe, Battleship, and Heads or Tails. In Scrabbles, users can play simultaneous games or send challenges to friends. This creates a playful and entertaining way to communicate, reminiscent of classic paper games. THE SECRET LIFE OF OBJECTS During the 2nd year Bachelor of Graphic Design visual identity course, students had to choose an object allowing them to perform an action and then bypass its basic function. Following this, the students created a fictitious company or a creator behind this object allowing them to develop a visual identity concept as well as define the recurring elements of the identity in order to establish a modular graphic system that can be applied to a multitude of different media, fixed and animated. FUTURE IS BELOW Edition & Poster The exhibition Future Is Below was born from the collaboration of four artists around a single object: the jigsaw blade. Each artist was free to choose how he or she would use it, leaving an almost unlimited space of possibility. The origin of the exhibition embodies a way of thinking about the underlying themes of ecology and the consequences of the mass of waste produced today by human beings through an object of manufacture. Is a future possible thanks to recovery? ByMaster Laser Edition, Animation & Poster Fictitious visual identity for the company Master. It is a company specialized in the sale of high-end precision lasers. It offers a wide range of products adapted to all levels of use, whether for amateurs or professionals. The identity is symbolized by a variable font, which perfectly represents the extent of Master s skills. The two axes of the typography are also significant: they represent the precision and the robustness of the proposed lasers. By10 – 4 Edition, Animation & Poster Why work from 9 to 5 when you can work from 10 to 4? That s the mantra of ten to four, a brand of accessories made from office objects that advocates non-productivity at work. The edition is presented as a guide to mastering the art of procrastination and can be read during lunch break or on the subway, before work, as a preamble to the day ahead. By Mineral grinding engineering Edition, Animation & Poster Mineral Grinding Engineering is a fictional company. It manufactures machines to grind the hardest minerals on the planet in order to make objects useful to people s daily lives. With this project, I tell the story of the realization and use of the PM-23 machine by the company s scientists through the creation of a visual identity. The work is oriented towards a scientific visual, with images of the study, archives, data, diagrams and elements that tell the story of the research. ByClay Edition, Animation & Poster Clayis a project based on the concept of DIY and conservation through skin care masks. Clay is a creator of homemade cosmetics that promotes sustainability, authenticity, less is more and independence. ByKAOS-3 Poster & Animation The KAOS-3 space is located underground: it is a club for those who want a loud, mathematically confusing, fluid, dirty experience. The identity project wants to look at the main tools for creating the performances offered in the club: the Korg Kaossilators (KO-1), that is, dynamic phrase synthesizers, which produce a different sound or note every time you touch the pad with a finger. The visual identity of the KAOS-3 club explores music, sound, visuals and modularity through a code that recreates random images through the use of synthesizer touch screens combined with sound. By

So how can we live better Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is able to respond in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. The work space, the living space, the public space, the interior space, the street, are carried by real statements of intent that motivate their forms, following certain principles such as climate transition, densification, ecology and energy transition.... The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on the production of a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural realization which refers to it in order to promote it. A ZANG MEYONG Edition Through this object, my mother was able to transmit to me the complexity of memories as an immigrant in a country that is not her own. With the help of archival photos, archival texts, and her actual words translating letters received from my grandfather, I immersed myself in the transmission of memories between my grandfather, my mother, and me, using her memories as a pivot of transmission between the past and the future. By Midi Minuit Edition & Animation The goal of the project is to tell a story through my filmed experiences and my thoughts written on paper, recomposed to tell a personal story of a woman who dares to appropriate the urban space, despite the innate fear she feels within herself. The visual part and the writing complement each other, the filmed part being an immersion in her skin, where the viewer travels the city through her point of view. The editing acts as subtitles to the video. It reflects her thoughts, feelings and interactions, the poetry of moments of solitude, of contemplation through the act of strolling. By DSE Edition DSE is a book about prisons, one of the most controversial environments in our justice system. They are supposed to be places where criminals are punished and rehabilitated, but they are often criticized for their overcrowding, lack of resources, and inhumane conditions of confinement. By VELVET FLOWERS Edition Velvet flowers questions the different feelings that abandoned places can evoke. When reading the work, a nostalgia settles in, then it s the turn of anxiety and uneasiness. We can feel different traces and imprints left by entities, human or not. The experience is transcribed through silver photographs, pages of dense texts and fragments of the place. The feeling of déjà vu submits us to a question of temporality that cannot be defied and questions the fact that we are never in the right traces. By SITTERWERK CATALOGUE Edition Umberto Eco said: "The most important function of a library is to help the reader discover books that he or she did not know existed and that turn out to be of great importance to him or her. In the Sitterwerk library in St. Gallen, books are put down as they please and temporary collections are created. Sometimes unrelated books are placed together on the same shelf. By eliminating all classifications, we leave room for the unexpected. Searching for a particular book is no longer the main objective, it is the experience of the place that takes precedence. This object follows a reflection around the book, taking as subjects of experiment a selection of 100 publications with as criterion of selection their format which must be between an A4 and an A3. Fogo Island Plastic Free Kites Fogo, nicknamed ‘a rock in the ocean is a small island situated off Newfoundland, Canada. As a part of a larger on-going semester project, 2nd Year Master Product Design students of ECAL, completed a short, fun, few day workshop, utilising one of the most abundant resources on the island - wind. Working in collaboration with the ShoreFast Foundation - an organisation working in numerous avenues to create a sustainable economy on the island, students developed plastic free kites. Fogo Island has the intention of becoming completely plastic free in the coming years and as their tourist numbers increase memorabilia of this special place are in higher demand. The developed kites are therefore to be made on the island and intended for the Fogo Island Workshop gift shop. Using Birch Wood, Ripstop Organic Cotton and hemp fibre string the students created a range of designs, taking reference from the unique features of the island.

COLLABORATION WITH LA PRAIRIE 2021 The packaging of tomorrow La Prairie pursues its partnership with ECAL students to conceptualise the packaging of the tomorrow. Through this partnership with the renowned Swiss University in Art and Design, La Prairie nurtures creativity and promotes emerging talents shaping the future of smart design. Under the creative leadership of designers Stefano Panterotto et Alexis Tourron (Panter&Tourron), six students developed their vision of the luxury packaging using La Prairie s Skin Caviar Luxe Cream folding box as their starting point. The students were invited to re-imagine the secondary packaging using a more sustainable approach and explore the possibilities that innovative materials, design techniques and technology offered while preserving the elevated product experience, inherent to the brand. This creative and diverse approach to finding viable solutions enhances the values of creativity and craftsmanship so essential to La Prairie. It ignites the House s innovative mindset by further exploring technologies, materiality and shapes that are available today, for a better tomorrow. Among the six projects developed, the nomadic kit concept, proposed by UAE student Salman Rouhani, was chosen for production. The different versions of this travel kit, adapted to La Prairie s product ranges, are now available for sale.

TalkCity The students worked on creating a typographic 3D environment in a web browser. Using the words extracted from a dialogue, a sequence is illustrated in a synchronised way on two screens. Marriage Story A heated dialogue between a couple from the movie “Marriage story” is illustrated. Each of the towers represents the words spoken and will be progressively destroyed as the exchanges continue. Following one or the other angle, the viewer discovers the landscape created by the words. Interactive gestures “During the workshop we ve invented a new web-interaction with the hand and body gesture. The unique gestures found in our daily habits have been combined with mobile touch screen, gyro sensor, web camera and microphones and created new narration in the websites on the screen. As we use specific gestures to express certain feelings, we need to create more sophisticated and diverse user web-interaction. Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac The 2022 documentary workshop was lead by Guillaume Brac. In partnership with the Lausanne Sport! ECAL film department proposed that I accompany ten second-year students on a documentary mandate financed by Lausanne Sport, the city s historic soccer club. Although I am interested in this sport, I was very clear from the start: it was not a question of making a film about soccer or the functioning of the club, but a film in which soccer would be the starting point, the spark, allowing me to go on to much more personal, intimate, singular elements. I insisted on the liberating power of the commission, at least when it is accompanied by a real freedom, which was the case here. I encouraged each student to find, if necessary to invent, the form, the device, the staging, that best corresponded to his or her sensitivity and subject. Documentary films offer to curious and adventurous filmmakers infinitely more possibilities in terms of film writing than fiction. And I believe that the films of this workshop, of an extreme diversity of forms, tones, and motifs, are a brilliant demonstration of this. Abundance & Scarcity When we live in a society with so much abundance yet at the same time so much scarcity, how do we discern the resources around us? How can we look to our surroundings to learn about where things come from, or how we might apply them in our own lives? More importantly, how can we live more harmoniously with nature by respecting it and taking only what we need? Within the workshop held by Nadine Sterk from Atelier NL the BA Industrial Design students were asked to create tableware around the theme ‘Abundance & Scarcity from vernacular earth collected together in the Sauvabelin woods in Lausanne. Students and crew had no hesitation in getting their hands (and clothes) dirty to knead, turn, form, glaze, and fire ceramic tableware that tells a story.

Alexis Perron-Corriveau – Flip Off This project seeks to explore the world of sunglasses and its related fashion accessories. The side shields used for mountaineering glasses combined with the unique style of the cycling cap were the conceptual premises of this research. The reinterpretation of these elements gives this pair of sunglasses a distinctive chic, sporty look – a must-have accessory. Stand alone, these handmade glasses are versatile. However, the possibility of adding a visor easily, thanks to a magnetic clip, allows the wearer to be ready for action and stylish at the same time.

Romain Talou – Future Heritage Future Heritage investigates how to make long-term, high-density information storage technologies more tangible. Working in the context of cultural heritage, the project allows institutions to keep their archives alive using DNA data storage for generations to come. Through a process of design research, the Future Heritage project explores how to make this synthetic DNA storage relevant for institutions today and far into the future. The resulting DNA storage object is designed to withstand environmental and societal changes over the next two thousand years. Using nano-engraving and a semiological approach, the object gives tangible hints and previews of the rich content that lies within it. Gala Espel – Archéologie du futur What will future archaeological discoveries look like? What meaning will they give our present time through the objects that will have been unearthed? Archéologie du futur (Archaeology of the Future) is a futuristic project featuring a series of objects that give a prospective representation of our material footprint. This project uses photogrammetry – a common tool in archaeology – to scan existing items and, based on these, to create, recompose and think up a possible scenario. A plant wraps around a container eroded by time. A shell fossilises around a metallic rod. A set of objects is created evoking a future where industrial forms are eventually taken over by nature. In time, this digital collection will materialise into silverware and jewellery made with this technology applied to design.

Briac Laforge – Time in Balance Having spent a year in Switzerland and being interested in the world of watchmaking, I naturally turned to this universe for my graduation project. I liked the idea of using the codes of Swiss watchmaking to adapt them to my work. For my graduation project, I sought to create an object using the precision, details and materials of various Swiss manufactures. The final object is a mobile clock with two balanced hands. The appearance of the object is simple and ethereal, due to the small number of visible parts. Nevertheless, the mobile hides a complex mechanism inside. The goal was to intrigue the user by creating a magical effect with these two balanced hands. Depending on the light, it is possible to read the time thanks to the shadow cast by the object on the ground.

Seungmok Lee – Play Collection for Picnic My project is based on a personal experience in Switzerland. Whenever I go for a picnic in parks or by the lake in Switzerland, I see people playing cards on the train or giant chess in the park with their family and friends. There is always a joyful atmosphere and a sense of happiness around them. That is why I decided to design this Play collection for picnic. I used sustainable materials like cork and paper, but at the same time, I sought to keep the aesthetics of the object. A thing of long-lasting beauty is engraving. Not only does it reduce chemical ink for printing but it also allows people to feel the contrast between light and shadow through the object.

Roxanne Del Val – Noue-moi un bijou When I started climbing, I had to learn the various knots. I immediately liked their shape, but also their meaning: they catch us if we fall, but they also allow us to move forward and progress on the climbing wall. Noue-moi un bijou (Tie me a jewel) is a collection of three items of jewellery inspired by climbing knots. I wanted to decontextualise them by using well-known types of jewellery such as rings, bracelets and necklaces. By modifying the shape of the knots, I created three pieces that wrap themselves around the hand, the finger and the chest. The jewellery is made of nylon paracord, to recall the primary inspiration of the collection. I also created small silver attachments that allow the jewellery to adjust to the shapes of the body.

Charlotte Angéloz – Weave It How does one create volumes using perforated material and fabric? This graphic and technical research focuses on the grid and weaving. I am interested in the construction of a volume from a graphic cut. The pattern cut into the leather gives rhythm to the creation and acts as a support for the weave. This helps create shapes and volumes. Following this research, I have chosen to design three bags that fit into a pop and colourful universe. The volumes created give the bag its shape and the place for the handles. The manufacturing system of these accessories allows for multiple possibilities. You can play with sizes and integrate various materials. You can also use scraps of fabric, recycled materials, and easily change parts when they are worn.

ECAL x On 2040 Master Product Design students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne havecreated, in collaboration with Swiss brandOn Running, shoe soles of the future. Under the direction of Christophe Guberan, guest designer of the MA in Product Design and with the support of Thilo Alex Brunner, head of design at On, 7 students present elaborate prototypes exploring the possibilities offered by innovative materials, techniques, and creative processes. A resolutely prospective approach that relies on speculative design to think the sole of tomorrow. In 2010 On created a new running shoe sole with a disruptive approach: CloudTec®. It is in this perspective that the collaboration between two leading entities in the Swiss design scene – ECAL and On – was born. Through a transversal approach to innovation, 34 students on a Master s programme at ECALhave developed a series of futuristic prototypes, rethinking the brand s universe, and exploring new writing systems. The interdisciplinary project brings together three Master s programmes: MA in Product Design, MA in Photography and MA in Type Design. Each year, these specializations attract students from all over the world.ELECTRIC MUD In 2040, the earth has been trodden by billions of men, by armies, sportsmen, bankers and adventurers. It becomes mud, shapeless, it sticks everywhere after having been trampled by our plastic sneakers, symbol of our consumerism. But the earth turned into mud keeps in its heart the strength to carry life. Inexhaustible ground of energy and diversity, it takes shape again. This mud is the amniotic liquid of tomorrow s material. The man of 2040 finds himself facing a new raw element, with which he regains his footing: the earth offers him a new ground to walk on. By THE LABORATORY The protagonists of this series are the engineers of On, busy in creating and perfectioning the new sole Clouds 2040 in the On laboratories. By ON RUNNING For the On running project, I created a futuristic visual world in which the shoes become living organisms. I took 3D scans of the shoes and transformed them into sculptures which would not be possible with classic photography. In the animations, they become something living even when they are made out of futuristic shiny materials. For me the future of products and materials should be hand in hand together with more natural and lab grown materials. On some pictures, it seems like you can harvest the shoes from the sculptures. The visuals also refers to classic still life photography and composition. By CLOUDS2040 For the On Clouds2040 project, I focused on the engineering part of the brand and tried to get to know On products through testing them with fictive devices. In a second step, I thought about how I can improve the shoes to make them ready for the challenges of the future. These are the results of my research. By CLOUDS2040 A little less than a month ago, China landed its first rover on Mars. Two months ago, the USA, with the help of its astromobile perseverance, converted carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere into oxygen. Twenty years ago, Russia sent their first tourist into space. What awaits us in twenty years from now? My vision of the future for 2040 is a vision that takes place elsewhere, in a different space-time, where the laws of physics that we have known until now would no longer apply. New materials will be discovered, materials that renew themselves and react according to the dimension in which they are found. As On is at the cutting edge of technology, the brand will have already appropriated the technology necessary to use these materials, in order to offer ever more daring models adapted to each level of intensity. Allowing then more space exploration. By MELANGE According to the rover perseverance which landed in February 2021, life on mars doesn t seem that far away anymore. So, the On 2040 campaign is all about looking forward to a new era of civilization on Mars while adapting to the changing environments. It focuses on growing from where we have come before trough the exploration of the planet, to try to find new sustainable materials in new organic growing, as well as the hybridization of humans and other non-human beings. By MEMORIES OF A ROCK Each rock is a hard drive in the natural form. Each rock contains a piece of memory that tells its own past, where it comes from, what it used to be, and what happened. Years after years, it keeps the data of itself as a secret, lying still in a river, in a mountain, meditating, waiting. ON 2040 - MASTER TYPE DESIGN Following a collaboration with the Swiss avant-garde brand On, ECAL is proud to present the interdisciplinary work carried out jointly by the 2nd year students of the Product Design, Photography and Type Design Masters. Under the direction of Larissa Kasper, artistic director invited by the MA in Type Design, 14 students question the construction of written language, and explore its futuristic developments, both alphabetical and ideographic. For On, they offer a new writing system, which will accompany the sole of the future.In 2010 On created a new running shoe sole with a disruptive approach: CloudTec®. Built around a set of “flexible elements”, On soles ensure cushioned landing and propulsive take-off for a unique running sensation. This design has since been adopted by running enthusiasts and professionals alike. Nowadays, the search for new materials and technologies encourages the brand to explore the future of soles. It is in this perspective that the collaboration between two leading entities in the Swiss design scene – ECAL and On – was born.Searching for an answer to what type of writing system could be readable for a machine in the distant future, this abstract typeface is based on a circular 5-channel encoding system, working similarly to linear punchcards. There are 25 punch combinations in the 5-channel type system, meaning 32 places to encode letters, which can host the basic Latin alphabet. Visually, the typeface was inspired by cuneiform writing, which uses the stylus on clay tablets to punch ‘holes in the material. This aesthetic has been warped into signifying a punch on a few of the 5 places and providing each character with a unique combination of digits and forms. By The concept of this dystopian writing system is inspired by the artwork The Garden of Earthly Delights (1490-1510) by Hieronymus Bosch and its tripartite structure. The Trinity takes the main role and divides the static skeleton vertically into 3 sections: Positive, Neutral, Negative; Birth, Life, Death; The Garden of Eden, The Garden of Delights and Hell. Round, angular and diagonal capital letters of the Latin alphabet are arranged in categories. With the help of 3 defined basic shapes: circle, square and line, the characters are constructed on its defined skeleton. Altogether, the writing system consists of 24 characters – the manuscript was painted analogue with black ink on translucent paper and emphasizes the dystopian character. By Between typography and pictogram, our design is evolving. Inspired by the geometric forms already present in the On logotype, we have rationalized to the extreme the concept of a refined and methodical graphic system. By a new problematic of the coded language, associated with contemporary technologies, a completely modular encrypted typography was drawn. The pictograms and letters are composed by a very simple system of curves and lines which evolve and are assembled on a square grid, divided in 4. The only rule being that the forms cannot be superimposed the ones on the others. The script is programmed under Python language, allowing to generate and to exhaust the whole of the possible ones, that is to say 624 pictograms only composed of curves, having to represent the sport, the movement and always assembled within the same grid. By ,Over the course of our time, language and communication will evolve in such a way that current writing systems no longer suffice. While there will still be translation methods for older systems still known to us, the writing system of the future will free itself from present rules and conventions and organically evolve into something exceedingly more complex. By The blob is a mysterious unicellular slim mold creature growing into networks. Famous for its supposed immortality, it has also been showing signs of learning capabilities. After many years of scientific studies and stimulation, it is finally able to communicate with us in 2040. By using a morpheme-based system, the blob can express complex ideas with its web-like growths. As seen in this transcription (to be read clockwise), each tentacle and intersections represent a basic concept which is then extrapolated into sentences and finally a full text. By New proposal for sending out a message to the future about ON 20(40). This new form of constructed language and writing system is inspired by the thermal-transfer printing technics. This digital printing method is used when fast and higher durability of printed matter (especially against heat) is desired. This « New Alphabet » offers a set of uppercase characters, as well as numbers and has been developed during the one-week workshop. By In the far future, human beings will communicate in whole new ways, we will understand the world around us in a much more complex way. The two-dimensional way of reading will be slowly replaced by three-dimensional holograms, capable of giving us a faster prediction of what is written. Based on the Spatial reasoning IQ tests exercises, this new writing system helps the reader draw conclusions about shapes based on limited information. Each face of the regular polyhedron will have a unique symbol on it (letter) and the Platonic solid will represent the complexity of the entire word. Holograms are a perfect solution when we don t want our communication to be framed on a surface, but with this system, we could still write on psychical objects by simply unfolding the polyhedron into a 2D Pattern. By In order to create a “new alphabet” that could potentially store knowledge about ON 2040(0) and transmit it into the future, I developed a constructed writing system consisting of two different styles. Both styles are built on the same basis. While the more organic style has a line system for better differentiation of the individual “characters”, the restrained one has a subtle feature consisting of different stroke lengths on the edges. Despite the technical appearance, the two styles enable a visual structure of the content into different information levels, which should help decrypt the message in the future. By Klaudz is designed to visually represent speech sounds in a written form by means of symbols. The script is based on a so-called phonetic transcription, whose basic principle is that it is applicable to all languages. Since its symbols denote the same phonetic properties, they break away from a language-bound orthography. Thinking of 2040, when internationality and the spoken language are gaining more importance, it is obvious to explore the forms of expression of an alternative phonetic script. The shapes of the letters derive from an underlying grid (the IPA vowel table), which in turn corresponds to the positions of the vowels resulting from the physical position of a speaker s tongue when pronouncing those sounds. Three ECAL diploma projects win the James Dyson Award 2022 (Swiss) Three ECAL graduates - Yoosung Kim in Master Product Design, Anaïs Lehmann and Lucie Herter in Bachelor Industrial Design - have won the James Dyson Award 2022 for their diploma projects. Zest –– Master Product Design Zest is a tailor-made solution for people with cerebral palsy. It is a model of sports shoes adapted to the motor skills of its users. Made using knitting and 3D printing technology, it can be adapted to any person with motor disorders and allows the creation of customised shoes that meet specific needs. A project made possible thanks to the collaboration of professional athletes with cerebral palsy and a test in the laboratory of the Swiss sports brand On. Line – – Bachelor Industrial Design Line is a 100% natural alternative to the plastic mulching films and sheets that are omnipresent in agriculture and horticulture. This innovative project aims at solving the problem of plastic micro-particles in market gardening and thus reducing soil pollution. Made from linseed oil-treated flax, Line is a highly resistant film that does not release any chemical microparticles into the soil. Its woven strip systems make it very flexible for use in a variety of plantings. R2Home – – Bachelor Industrial Design While 2 000 radiosondes are sent into the atmosphere every day to collect meteorological data, only 20% of them are found. R2Home, a paragliding robot, makes it possible to control the landing of radiosondes and thus minimise economic losses and environmental pollution. Its recyclable materials such as expanded polypropylene protect it from cold, rain and falls. R2Home is a project resulting from the collaboration between Lucie Herter, a student in the Industrial Bachelor s programme at ECAL, and Yohan Hadji, a student in micro-engineering at the École polytechnique de Lausanne (EPFL).

Partnerships with Mec-Art Within the framework of the partnership between ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne and Mec-Art (Pour la Mécanique d Art), the students of the Master in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship had the opportunity to visit the manufactures and meet the artisans based in the town of Sainte-Croix. This region of the Franco-Swiss Jura arc gathers a great deal of know-how in watchmaking and art mechanics and is now part of UNESCO s Intangible Cultural Heritage. These visits and encounters should enable the students of the ECAL program to create simple and fun mechanical parts that will illustrate the various skills specific to the region, such as automatons, music boxes or watchmaking. Wind Shangwei Zhou,Somchai Thumthatanuk The mechanical components contrast with the natural and organic aesthetic of this clock, inspired by the iconic landscapes of Switzerland. Realized by the best craftsmen based in the small village of Sainte-Croix, this unique piece illustrates a perfect harmony between three typical Swiss mechanical arts: watches, automatons and music boxes. After every full turn of the minute hand, a music starts to ring and the blue metal pieces wave slowly, as the wind over the surface of the Leman lake. Colours, illusions and concept of time Sarah Yao Based on a gradient optical illusion by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, our eyes perceive colours differently depending on the shade of the background they are placed against. I wanted to visualise the passage of time through colour - the resulting objects are a translation of this animated effect through the use of simple but elegant mechanics.

Nora Fatehi – Mirror Me-rror In an environment where the line between digital and tangible is becoming increasingly thin, having an existence in immaterial spaces implies shaping and maintaining an avatar that is often created in one s own image. Living in these in-between worlds inevitably leads to the development of a more or less strong connection with one s own digital representations. This is notably the case of my own avatar, with whom I share more than just a well-defined clothing style. In Mirror Me-rror, she and I become one. By using my physical and digital data to influence her abilities as my “virtual self”, I find myself constantly connected to her. With this project, I question the relationship that each of us nurtures with our digital identities and offer a gamified perspective of our own lives.

Marine Dang – For the Times They Are a-Changin For the Times They Are a-Changin is a graphic interpretation of the play PRLMNT written by Camille de Toledo in 2017. The anticipatory fiction is divided into two parts: the first one is set in a capitalist system with unlimited expansion and power, while the second one seeks resilience and recognition of the rights of non-humans. The challenge of this publication is to bring these ideologies into dialogue, to offer a parallel reading of the two scripts. To do this, I experimented with the materiality of the object. Through the choice of formats, papers and fonts, I both oppose and mix these statements. Mélanie Fontaine – Latent* The mirroring system of instant messaging implies the presumed availability of the interlocutor. However, while waiting for a response, certain questions become recurrent: “Alex is online, why isn t he answering? What is he doing?” Latent* is a chat application that allows you to converse with your friends by developing the context of the discussion and what is not said. Just like theatre, it fuels the conversation by adding didascalies generated according to the collected data (response time, location). Maryam Ghasemi – Home This work is based on the places and geographies that I have so far called home, using archives of my family photos. The pixels and glitches are used here as tools. I am interested in a liminal space between public and private, presence and absence. This is the reflection of my own personal experiences as a person who finds herself in a kind of in-between place. The installation of these private spaces that are revealed provides viewers with a sense of drifting and in-betweenness.

Stefan Tanase – I Feel So Vacation Today… I Feel so Vacation Today… is a time machine that brings an existing scene from 2019 into the continuous present, namely the atypical sequence from the For Sale exhibition that took place in Bern at Ballostar Mobile, where Ștefan Tănase simulated his own accident by driving a car through the gallery window. To succeed, the artist himself used a sledgehammer with which he broke the window. The accumulation of ideas inevitably took off through a snowball technique, rolling and growing increasingly. Tănase manages to find the humorous formula between post-communist aesthetics and western economics as exemplified by the communist slogan “we work, we don t think!”.

Sunna Margrét Þórisdóttir – Five Songs for Swimming Five Songs for Swimming is an installation project that is divided into three parts: vinyl, book and performance. The vinyl consists of five original songs inspired by the late Unnur Ágústsdóttir, a swimming queen from the 40s who grew up on an isolated island in the Atlantic. The book titled An Insufficient Guide to Writing a Lullaby is written around the songs recorded on the vinyl in relation to the subject of the lullaby and daydreaming. A bright velvet fabric marks the space where the songs are performed.

Michail Galanopoulos – The Parade (Direction) A day in the life of a group of high school students in Athens, Greece, during the day of the national military parade. Fiction / 24 min Synopsis A group of high school students meet to participate in the national parade with their school. A student, is bullied by the teacher because of her nationality. They react, defend her and the conflict becomes intense. To avoid the consequences, they decide to run away. They settle on the top of a nearby hill and spend the rest of the day there, as an act of escapism. Up there, they seem to have forgotten their anxieties and problems, as if they were in another world. Student s comment The film s cinematographic approach is anthropocentric and strongly focused on the characters of the story. The use of handheld camera allows us to follow multiple characters, not limiting the actors movements, but also giving them the freedom to experience the real locations in which they are filmed. The editing, with breaks in the axis several times in the duration of a scene, connecting several shots that depict the same action and pass from one character to another, was chosen specifically for this type of cinematography. The sound establishes continuity throughout each scene.

Danpeng Cai – TEXTure TEXTure is a fingerprint for physical objects that integrate information through a texture on their surface. It converts encoded texts to assigned machine-readable textures, which were once relatively arbitrary. Inspired by the Turing pattern, a reaction-diffusion system portrays how nature brings uniqueness to each creation, TEXTure can develop automatically and individuate each product through fabricating processes like 3D printing. An embedded fingerprint enables industrial products to move toward full life cycle traceability. It has a high potential for phone-scannable accessibility, anti-counterfeiting, extended producer responsibility, recycling, vintage markets, etc.

Yoosung Kim – Zest Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most common diseases in the world. Despite their disability, people with CP would like to be more physically active, as evidenced by the Paralympics, which features many disabled players and sports. However, there is a lack of shoes for such people. Simply putting on the shoes and lacing them often presents a challenge for the user, who most of the time has to ask for help from their coach. My Zest shoe is easy to put on with one hand. In addition, it can be customised according to personal physical ability using knitting and 3D printing technology. This project was developed thanks to feedback from professional athletes with CP and testing in the lab of Swiss sportswear brand On.

Reo Koda – In Fill Out - TPU In Fill Out is a new manufacturing process that inflates a 3D printed object by heating the air inside. In order to achieve the most effective use of activated air, I designed the shoe sole to take advantage of its cushioning function with TPU – a kind of material that is flexible, recyclable, and widely used in the footwear industry. The result introduces new possibilities for digital manufacturing: fewer materials, lightweight, zero waste, recyclability, short printing time, less post-processing, personalisation to the foot, and much more.

Thomas Manil – Lemanne Jewellery is a product, the result of know-how, that raises questions about its materials, manufacturing techniques, aesthetics, etc. From high jewellery to costume jewellery, via the stances taken by contemporary jewellers, the jewellery sector – whether it comes under the heading of craftsmanship, art or design – has found its way into innovation and creativity. Lemanne is a collection of jewels inspired by the Lake Geneva region, which makes use of its traditional know-how. The refined combination of pearls, made from pure guanine of fish scales from Lake Geneva, combined with manufacturing processes and fishing techniques, generates the DNA and character of the project in its entirety.

Carolin Schelkle – The Black Sheep of the Wool Industry There are more than 1000 sheep breeds in the world, producing fibres of different colours, lengths, and textures, but only the finest wool is suitable for the textile industry. Since European wool does not reach these high standards, large amounts of raw wool have turned from a source of income into a waste product. With increasing interest in sustainable use of natural resources, wool should be re-considered as an underrated and underused renewable resource, worthy of better exploration. This project investigates the potential of European wool by exploring a new production process, i.e., automatic felting. The resulting jacket illustrates the potential of this technology and takes advantage of the natural properties of wool, turning it from waste into a valuable raw material.

Borja Suqué – Hand-Assembled Portable Light Series When designing an object, ad hoc processes are frequently used to imitate industrial ones. These improvised methods are often as intriguing as the ones they represent. At a time when it is difficult to rely on conventional producers due to constant changes in supply chains and the market, it is engaging to seek alternatives that allow for creative interest and production outside of industrialisation. Triggered by these factors, my project explores a method of self-producing a limited series of portable lights in a way that falls outside the traditional discipline of design and the standardised processes of mass production. All the lamps are hand assembled and made using off-the-shelf materials, techniques and electrical components.

Stefan Troendle – HydrogenCooker According to the WHO, the use of fossil fuels in the home, including cooking, and the resulting indoor air pollution causes 3.8 million deaths each year, mostly in developing countries. HydrogenCooker is a green hydrogen-powered cooking station developed in collaboration with EPFL s Renewable Energy Research Laboratory and Softpower, a start-up from Cameroon. The stove can replace current open fire or natural gas cookers while using locally solar-generated hydrogen and only emitting water vapour during the cooking process. As a result, cooking becomes less harmful and more sustainable. Local production of the appliance and deviant cooking habits discovered on a research trip to Cameroon guided the design process.

Alexey Chernikov – Above Everything Developed during the war in Ukraine, this project focuses on the fragility of our peaceful existence, the power of surveillance and uncertainty about the future. The project uses the visual vocabulary of military drones. A thermal camera is mounted on a drone that provides recognisable black and white imagery. The medium itself has a vital role as it conveys the aesthetic appearance of the work. A huge amount of images from battlefields are shot from the sky. This footage most often ends with a bomb strike. In Above Everything, a parallel reality is created where the ending of each video is unpredictable. The video sequences, together with distorted propeller sounds, create a feeling of constant threat, depicting the tension caused by the war that is happening thousands of kilometres away.

Mahalia Taje Giotto – Existential Boner existential boner is a book about obsessions. Obsessions linked to the body, gender identity, sexuality and desire. Mahalia Taje Giotto, born in 1992, was assigned female at birth. Going through several phases of physical transformation - from writing on their skin as a child to tattoos as an adult and eating disorders as an adolescent - Taje began their transition in 2020. This identity journey is at the heart of their work, which expresses the incessant thoughts that drive them through a play of superimpositions. The daily observation of physical changes is transcribed in images and texts, somewhere between abstract and concrete. The result is an articulated chaos that reflects the way in which taje is experiencing their transformation, with a sculptural approach to the book as a reflection of the changes in her body. The artist explores their desires and fluid identity, while giving visibility to the transgender community from which they come.

Augustin Lignier – Container Container is a project about alienation. From the camera, the machine, space, images, the medium, and from an idea. Through the medium of photography and performance, I build rules to experience the relationship with the apparatus. By seeking to push my body to the limits, I experiment on the camera and the body like a black box in a white cube. The rules are inputs and the images the output. Attempting to understand the reaction of a repetitive action on the videos. Focusing on the obsession of pressing the shutter button on the images. Using this action as a solution. To see the pictures, the viewer has to perform the same action as the performer. The experiments give the power to the machine. Producing images, performing, recording and exhibiting are one thing.

Sophie Schreurs – Fed Underbelly of Silicon Valley Fed Underbelly of Silicon Valley is an immersive installation that makes the hidden social and political tensions of social media platforms physical and tangible. The power of social media platforms is not only apparent because they possess the archive of our culture, but mostly because they decide on the visibility of content. While seemingly democratic, it is clear that nowadays some voices are amplified while others are silenced by content moderation. I draw a parallel between the mechanisms behind social media platforms and the workings of the human body. I imagine the body as a carrier of memories and emotions that seep through and cling to the walls of our insides. Just like our organs filter and circulate – so do the platforms.

Alisa Strub – My Grind Bears Fruit My Grind Bears Fruit is an installation of projected self-portraits combined with manually painted text which chart territory in my engagement with identity, self-revelation and contemporary media culture. It explores the tension between public and private life, the need to talk about ourselves and our thoughts while creating a blurry line between intimate documentation and a constructed point of view. The seemingly still but slightly moving images are situations where I perform for the camera, influenced by the perception of what I consume online daily. They combine and collide with an intuitive, free, yet deliberately scripted use of words culled from net culture and create a rhythmic counterpoint that challenges viewers to confront their own experiential thresholds.

Giacomo Bastianelli – Quarto Unlike the more traditional five-lined musical stave, a graphic score is a different way of notating a piece of music. Originally called “eye music,” it first appeared in its modern form in the 1950s, when notation became more and more influenced by a dialogue with painting, installations, and performativity. These conceptions required a new language and a unique reading of what it is to be musical. Quarto aims to revisit the idea of graphic scores in a contemporary tone, connecting MIDI technology with variable fonts and producing an experience that could take the form of an interactive/synesthetic performance or a piece of printed visual music with its own autonomy, independent of sound.
