Get ready for a thrilling ride as we dive into the world of MotoGP! Jack Miller's first day on the Yamaha V4 left everyone talking, and for all the right reasons.
On Tuesday's Valencia MotoGP test, Miller, an Australian rider, wrapped up his initial day on the V4 prototype, ending up 20th on the timesheets, a respectable 1.491 seconds behind the leader, Raul Fernandez. But here's where it gets interesting: Miller wasn't the only one turning heads. His teammate, Fabio Quartararo, set an impressive lap time of 1m 29.927s, just over half a second off Fernandez's pace.
Most teams had a delayed start due to a slowly drying track, but Yamaha and its race riders had an advantage. They're staying at Valencia for a private test on Wednesday, giving them an edge to refine their strategy.
Miller shared his thoughts: "Decent first day. We've got some work to do, but we're heading in the right direction. Fabio's lap time was scorching! We're not too far off, but I've got some areas to improve on with my feedback and setup."
He continued, "Tomorrow, we'll focus on ironing out the details and testing a few items to decide the direction for our bike setup in Malaysia. It's a new project, so today was about understanding and making the bike our own."
And this is the part most people miss: Miller believes Quartararo's impressive lap time is a sign of the V4's potential, even though it's running with a 'conservative' power output.
"We wouldn't switch if we didn't think the V4 had more potential than our current bike," Miller explained. "Fabio being just over half a second off is promising, especially considering we're steady with the engine. It was a decent lap time."
But there's a catch: the electronics need work. Miller compared it to his experience last year with the M1, saying, "It's about progression, throttle, and TC. We need to get the fuelling right and ensure the bike runs smoothly without spinning on the first touch."
Test rider Augusto Fernandez, who rode the V4 in Sunday's season finale, struggled with front-end feeling. Miller acknowledged, "We need a considerable step in the front end. Coming off the M1, with its remarkable front end, it's a challenge, but we've got a clear direction."
Meanwhile, Miller's new teammate, Toprak Razgatlioglu, set the 18th fastest lap time in his first official MotoGP test. Miller praised his performance, saying, "He had a good day. I'm keen to hear his feedback on the bike and the tyres. It'll be interesting to compare notes."
So, what do you think? Is the Yamaha V4 a game-changer? Will Quartararo's impressive lap time be a turning point in the season? Let's discuss in the comments!
